Atrovent whose generic name is Ipratropium Bromide Inhaler is actually a bronchodilator that aids in dilating the bronchi present in the lungs. This drug has been found to be effective in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that is related to severe bronchitis and emphysema. This medicine works by blocking the effect of the cholinergic nerves which in turn aids the muscles to unwind and bronchi to dilate. This medication when taken in through inhalation passes directly to the lungs and as a result a very minute quantity is absorbed into the system.

This medication is actually a preventive and the dosage varies according to the severity of your condition. It varies from two to six inhalations twice to four times a day. You have to use this inhaler regularly in order to get maximum effectiveness from it. It is best to inhale this medication exactly as per your doctor’s instructions and never overdose or use it for longer periods than recommended. If you are using the inhaler device for the first time, first spray two doses into the air not anywhere near your face. This should be done each time you do not use the inhaler for more than a couple of days.

This medication has not been found to interact with any other medications so far and whether it can be used while pregnant or while lactating is not sure yet. The normal side effects that have been discovered in patients who are under this medication are headache, giddiness, dry mouth , cough, nausea, tummy upset, hazy vision and hoarseness. But make sure that you get in touch with your doctor immediately if you experience severe reactions like breathing difficulties, allergic reactions like hives, accelerated heart beat and inflammation of your lips, face, tongue or throat.
